What is a Byte?
A byte is a term used in computing to describe file or memory size. A byte represents eight bits of data, or binary digits, which is about the size of one character or number. Because bytes are so small, they are normally not used to measure file sizes or hardware memory. Rather, files are often measured in kilobytes (1024 bytes) or megabytes (1024 kilobytes, or over a million bytes) and hardware memory is typically measured in gigabytes (1024 megabytes) or terabytes (1024 gigabytes).
